OUR STORY

Hear our story and what inspired us to share the magnesium sleep aid with the world.

HOW IT STARTED

My name is Jason, born and raised in Melbourne, Australia. I was working in consulting but I was just a functioning zombie.

Stress, anxiety, pressure - it was all building up. My overthinking mind was working overtime (literally!) and I would go into this constant cycle of: scrolling my phone mindlessly in bed, then putting it down to try to sleep, to eventually just staring at my ceiling.

I tried everything:

  • Hot shower before bed
  • Limit blue light before sleeping
  • Stop drinking caffeine by 12pm
  • Regularly exercising
  • No daytime naps
  • No big meals before sleep
  • Sleeping in cooler temperatures
  • Sleep masks
  • White noise machines
  • Weighted blankets
  • Herbal relaxing teas (later realised tea has caffeine in it, why was this ever a good idea?)

But alas, nothing worked.

I knew about melatonin as well but I had read and heard about the dependency aspect of it, there weren't that many long term studies done on it and most importantly, it's a prescription medicine here in Australia.

ALL THINGS MAGNESIUM

That's when I came across magnesium.

Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in your body. It's not some niche micronutrient - it's foundational. Your muscles need it to contract and relax properly. Your nervous system needs it to regulate signaling. Your body needs it to produce energy at a cellular level (ATP, the energy currency of your cells, requires magnesium to function).

Here's the problem: most people are deficient and don't know it. Studies suggest roughly 50% of the population isn't getting adequate magnesium from their diet alone. Modern farming has depleted soil mineral content, processed foods strip it out, and stress - the thing most of us are trying to fix - actually burns through magnesium faster.

The symptoms of low magnesium read like a checklist of "things I just accepted as normal": muscle tension, headaches, poor sleep, restlessness, brain fog, irritability. Sound familiar?

What makes it worse is that magnesium deficiency doesn't show up well on standard blood tests. Only about 1% of your body's magnesium sits in your blood - the rest is in your bones, muscles and tissues. So you can test "normal" and still be functionally low.

The fix is straightforward: consume more of it. But not all magnesium is created equal - and that's where things get interesting.

THE SCIENCE

Being the over-thinker and over-optimizer that I am, I began my quest for the best form of magnesium. I discovered there are a lot of “forms” of magnesium such as, but not limited to:

  • Magnesium Oxide
  • Magnesium Citrate
  • Magnesium Glycinate
  • Magnesium Taurate
  • Magnesium Malate
  • Magnesium Gluconate....

Most common forms such as magnesium oxide or citrate have laxative properties however magnesium glycinate and l-threonate was exactly what I was after. Magnesium Glycinate and Magnesium L-Threonate stood out for 3 reasons:

  1. Superior absorption without laxative properties: both are chelated which dramatically improves bioavailability compared to other forms & there is a significantly reduced GI side effects.
  2. Glycine + L-Threonate (seperate to magnesium) themselves have sleep and relaxation properties: Glycinate/Glycine promotes sleep and reduces core body temp and L-Threonate crosses blood-brain barrier exceptionally well increasing brain magnesium concentrations. They are highly synergistic with magnesium to help support a better night's rest.
  3. They support GABA activity and reduce excitatory signaling: in plain english, they help your brain relax better.

I began trialling these 2 supplements and as "Patient Zero" of my own lab experiment, I had profound success.

My muscles felt less tense, constant headaches also seemingly reduced and a few days in, I was actually falling asleep faster and deeper.

THE FINAL PIECE OF THE PUZZLE

But still, my biggest problem was that I HATED taking pills and tablets.

Most available forms of magnesium are either in powders, pills or tablets.

Gummies are often marketed towards kids - but this raised the question: "Why is it just kids? Who ACTUALLY enjoys taking pills?".

And thus,

Dozey was born.
